We are a group of amateur astronomers who formed a non-profit 501(c)3 organization for providing access to a site, Lone Star Observatory, with dark skies and a large research-grade telescope. Our purpose is to introduce lifetime learners of all ages to the awe and wonder of the night sky.
Lone Star Observatory is located an hour north of the Red River between the towns of Durant, OK and Atoka, OK. The site includes an enclosed compound with a domed observatory containing a large computer-controlled telescope, a viewing deck, and a heated/air-conditioned clubhouse. The clubhouse consists of a full kitchen, dining area, full bath, bunk room, and TV and lounge area that will make your visit comfortable and pleasurable—especially on cold nights.
Your guide or guides, one or more amateur astronomers, will be with you throughout the evening to teach you about the night sky and the multitude of stunning objects you can see both with and without a telescope. The guide will operate the telescope and allow you to view these objects “up close and personal.” Our goal is to make your evening a wonderful learning experience and to share our excitement about the night skies and our love of astronomy.
